Instagram’s Augmented Reality Filters Are Here!
The battle between Snapchat and Instagram for “best” social media platform has been going on for the past couple of years, and one of Instagram’s recent updates proves that it is not going to end any time soon. Instagram added augmented reality (AR) to its already extensive list of Instagram story filters. Given that this update comes only a few months after Snapchat started experimenting with its own AR filters, it’s safe to say that Instagram sees a lot of potential in these new filters.
For those who don’t know, augmented reality filters allow users to create three-dimensional graphics to make it seem as if those graphics exist in the real world. Let’s say, for example, there is an AR filter of a bouncing ball. Through my phone, I would be able to see the ball bouncing on whatever surface my camera is pointing at, and I would be able to see 360 degrees around the ball. It would look, through my phone, as if the bouncing ball was actually right in front of me. AR filters are essentially a mix of reality and virtual reality.
So, what does this mean for Instagram users? Well, it means that companies, celebrities, influencers and even the every-day social media user can seriously amp up the creativity of their Instagram stories. A lot of what social media revolves around is catching someone’s attention. People want to stand out, and the new AR filters provide a new avenue for Instagram users to branch into. The days of the two-dimensional face filters may be dying and giving way to AR filters, and Instagram is the latest social media platform to jump on board.
