'AI is a tool. People are the point.' Socialocca builds its apps and websites human-led, in public

SCRANTON, Pa., Nov. 2, 2026 —

As AI fills the internet with rushed, generic products, Socialocca, an independent product studio, is taking a public stand on how its work gets made: AI is a tool, and people are the point.

Socialocca doesn't claim to be AI-free. It says plainly that it uses automation extensively. What it promises is that a person is in charge of every decision, that everything automated tools help with is reviewed by a human, and that it never passes off automated work as purely human-made.

"We use AI the way a carpenter uses power tools, never as the author," said Ryan K. Hertel, founder of Socialocca. "The judgment, the taste, and the responsibility stay with people. And we're honest about where the tools helped, because people deserve to know."

The rules, in public

Socialocca's Digital Ethics page sets out six principles: privacy first, transparency, human-led and digitally assisted work, no automated slop, sustainability, and security. Among its commitments:

• Every digitally assisted output goes through human review.
• Client materials are never used to train AI models.
• Automated work is never passed off as purely human-made.

The studio applies the same standard to its own brand. Its look starts with original, artist-made illustrations, and where AI helped, such as the animation of its illustrated island map, the page says so.

Products that leave AI out on purpose

Several Socialocca apps are built with no AI at all, because for them, the human part is the point:

• Inkaloo, a retro website builder where nothing writes your words for you
• Shapeshifter, a color tool built on color science, with free lessons for learning color by hand

The same standard for clients

At Sites by Socialocca, the studio's website service, people design every site, and AI is never left in charge of a client's site unattended. Where AI helps with a design element, it's redrawn as a vector and recolored by hand. As the studio puts it: "AI is a tool. Judgment is the job."
