As AI tempts people to skip learning color, Shapeshifter teaches it, with real pigments and no AI

A free palette tool built on color science, with a hands-on studio where anyone can learn to mix paint the way painters do.

    SCRANTON, Pa., Nov. 2, 2026

Socialocca today highlighted Shapeshifter, a free brand-color tool with no AI in it, built to make good color accessible and to teach people how color actually works.

As AI image and design tools promise instant results, more people are skipping the part where they learn why colors work together. Shapeshifter goes the other way. Nothing in it is generated by a model. Every palette comes from color science, and its Studio lets anyone paint with real historical pigments and learn color hands-on.

"AI made it easy to never learn color," said Ryan K. Hertel, founder of Socialocca. "You can get a palette in a second and still not know why it works, or whether anyone can read the text on it. I wanted a tool that gets you a great palette and leaves you understanding color a little better than before."

Palettes that work, not just palettes that look nice

People describe their industry, the feeling they want, and their audience, and Shapeshifter returns a complete palette, with a role for every color: primary, background, surface, accent, and neutral.

Readability is built in, not checked afterwards. Contrast standards are a rule the generator has to satisfy, and every palette is previewed the way people with the three common types of color blindness see it. AI models, by contrast, can hallucinate colors and can't guarantee contrast.

Palettes export in nine formats, including CSS, Tailwind, Figma tokens, and Adobe swatches, with no account needed.

A free place to learn color

The Shapeshifter Studio is a free, hands-on way to learn color. People mix eight real historical pigments, like ultramarine, vermilion, and gamboge, and work through five short lessons:

    • Paint is not light
    • Warm and cool primaries
    • Tints and shades
    • Complements cancel
    • Read a color like a painter

Each lesson only moves on once the student has actually mixed the paint. A lesson you can click straight through teaches nothing.

    Availability

Shapeshifter is free, with no sign-up, at shapeshifter.socialocca.io. It first launched in 2025, and the Studio and its lessons were added in October 2026.
