Ads or organic?
Why most small creators and businesses should grow organically first, and the narrow cases where paying makes sense.

Every platform will happily take your money to show your posts to more people, and the "Boost" or "Promote" button is always right there. For most small creators and businesses, the honest advice is: not yet. Grow organically first, and pay only to scale something you've already proven works.
Why organic first
- Ads amplify; they don't fix. If a post doesn't connect with people organically, paying to show it to more people mostly buys you more people who don't care.
- Bought attention rarely becomes community. People who found you through a paid boost are often less interested than people who found you on their own or through a friend.
- Organic teaches you. Every post is a free experiment about what your audience wants. That knowledge is what makes ads work later, if you ever need them.
- Small budgets disappear fast. A few boosted posts can cost more than a month of tools, props or time that would have made better content.
When paying can make sense
Ads can be worth it once a few things are true:
- You have an offer that already sells organically.
- You roughly know what a customer is worth to you over time.
- You have a post that's already performing well with real people.
- You can afford to lose the budget while you learn.
- You'll measure the result in sales or sign-ups, not views.
A candle maker's video about their autumn scent is doing well organically and is bringing in orders. Before a holiday market, they spend a small, fixed amount promoting that exact video to people nearby, and track orders with a code. If the orders don't cover the spend, they stop. Either way, they learned something specific.
Free ways to reach more people
- Collaborate with someone whose audience overlaps yours, and make something together.
- Show up in other people's comments with genuinely useful replies.
- Go where your people gather: groups, forums, local events, Discord servers.
- Ask happy customers and fans to share. Most people are glad to help someone they like.
- Make news: a launch, an opening, a milestone. Tell local press and newsletters about it.
