Groups, local communities and Marketplace: still where a lot of real-world business happens.

Facebook isn't the trendy choice, and that's exactly why it's underrated. It's where a huge number of local customers, parents, neighbors, hobby groups and older audiences still spend real time. For a bakery, a gym, a contractor, a church, a nonprofit or a craft seller, it's often the platform that actually brings people through the door.
How Facebook decides what people see
Your feed mixes posts from friends, Pages and groups you follow with recommendations from accounts you don't. For those recommendations, Meta's own explanation says it predicts things like how long you'll spend on a post, whether you'll share or like it, join a group or RSVP to an event, and whether you'll hide it. People can also tap "Show more" or "Show less" to steer it[1].
Original work wins; reposting loses
Facebook has spent the last two years pushing hard against reposted content. Since 2025, accounts that repeatedly reuse other people's videos, photos or text lose monetization for a while and get less reach on everything they post[2]. In March 2026 it went further: a Reel built on someone else's material only counts as original if you add something new, like information, analysis or a story. Watch-alongs, reaction faces, stitched clips and simple re-uploads with borders or captions count as unoriginal[3].
The flip side is good news for small creators: Meta reported that views and time spent on original Reels roughly doubled in the second half of 2025 compared with a year earlier[3].
Pages, profiles and groups
- A Page is the right home for a business or organization: hours, reviews, events, messages, and the ability to run ads later.
- Professional mode on a personal profile suits a personal brand: you keep your profile and add creator tools.
- Groups are where community happens. A group for your customers, students, members or local scene gives people a place to talk to each other, not just to you. Meta even launched Forum, a dedicated app for Groups, in the US in September 2026[8].
A small climbing gym runs a Page for hours, events and announcements, and a members' group where climbers find partners, share beta on new routes and organize meetups. The group does more for retention than any post, because the members keep each other coming back.
What tends to work
Do
- Original Reels filmed at your business or in your work
- Events: workshops, launches, open days, with an RSVP
- Behind-the-scenes and the people behind the business
- A group where your community can talk to each other
- Answering every message and review, promptly
Skip
- Reposting viral clips from other accounts
- Reactions and watch-alongs with nothing new added
- Links in every caption
- Engagement bait ("Comment YES if...")
- Posting only when you're selling
How people earn on Facebook
Check your Professional Dashboard for what's available to your account; most programs depend on country and eligibility.
- Content Monetization: one program that pays for Reels, Stories, photos and text posts, based on originality, engagement and qualified views. It's invite-only; you can express interest from the Monetization section of the Professional Dashboard[4].
- Stars: fans send Stars on your videos and live streams. Eligibility includes 500 followers for 30 days in a row and meeting Meta's monetization policies; you earn $0.01 per Star[5].
- Subscriptions: monthly fan support for Pages that meet audience and engagement thresholds (such as 10,000 followers or 250 return viewers, plus recent engagement or watch time), in 36 countries[6].
- Brand partnerships: sponsored posts with the "Paid partnership" label.
- Your own offers: for local businesses, this is the big one. Messages, events and bookings from people who live nearby.
Facebook has also been verifying real people with a free "Verified" badge based on a selfie check, and says it's exploring letting small businesses list on Marketplace[7].
AI on Facebook
Meta shows an "AI info" label on content it detects as AI-generated, and requires you to disclose photorealistic video or realistic audio you made or altered with AI[9]. The originality rules above apply too: AI-generated reposts of other people's work count as unoriginal.
