    Choose your platforms

You don't need to be everywhere. How to pick one or two places and do them well.

5 min readBy Ryan Hertel (heyitskenton), Socialocca2027 edition · reviewed October 2026

You don't need to be on every platform. Spreading yourself across seven apps usually means doing all of them badly and burning out. One home base done well, plus maybe one place where you lightly reshare, is plenty for most people, and a lot more sustainable.

    Three questions that decide it

    1. Where are the people you want to help? Think about where they already spend time and where they look for what you offer, not where you think you should be.
    2. What format suits you? Short videos, long videos, live streams, photos, writing. You'll keep doing what you're comfortable making, and quit what you dread.
    3. How do people act on it there? Some platforms are built for discovery, some for conversation, some for search, some for buying. Match it to your offer.

    Find your fit

Not sure where to start? Answer four questions and see which platforms suit what you make, who you want to reach, and the time you have.

This is a starting point, not a rulebook. Plenty of artists thrive on LinkedIn and plenty of consultants on TikTok. Each platform gets its own chapter, with how it works today and how people earn there.

Home base, and a light second

Your home base is where you put your real effort: you post there first, reply to everyone, and learn how it works. A light second is where you reshare the same work with small changes, without trying to master it. Many short videos work on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels alike, with a new caption and no other platform's watermark.
